For example in a question from Time and Work where 17 people work for 12 days you can find the total work done by them as 204 in a second whereas, you would have to lose a considerable amount of time in manually multiplying and finding the value, which you could have used more effectively for some other purpose. Similarly squares and powers also will help a lot. You can start by memorizing squares of numbers from 1 to 30, basic powers of numbers from 2 to 12 and ,multiplication tables up to 20 by 20, this may a look a bit overwhelming to remember but with practice it will be a piece of cake.
