Hi Reena Suresh and Manju Neelima, the CAT exam has 3 sections - VARC (Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) and Quantitative Ability (QA).
Till 2019, the exam was for 3 hours, with 1 hour per section. Since 2020, the exam is for 2 hours, with each section being for 40 minutes. The sections are in this order - VARC, DILR and QA. We have to solve each section in this order, and we cannot switch from one section to another.
The CAT 2022 exam pattern is not out yet, but it is expected to be 2 hours. IIMs changed the time to 2 hours, so that there could be 3 shifts instead of 2 shifts (for distancing test takers due to the Covid pandemic). If there is a new wave, it will most probably be 2 hours. The details will start getting clear from August onwards.
The exam has MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) and non MCQ or TITA (Type In The Answer) questions. You get +3 for each question answered correctly, and -1 or 0 for each error (-1 for MCQ and 0 for TITA). There are no negative marks for unanswered questions.
The IIMs do not come out with the detailed syllabus, but we can get that from the past papers. In brief, it is:
VARC - RCs and non-RCs in 2:1 ratio (non RCs include Summary, Jumbled Paragraphs, Odd One Out)
DILR - Arrangement, Numerical Reasoning, Matching, Ranking, Selections, Teams and Events, Bar Graphs, Tables, Pie charts, Venn Diagrams, Caselets, Lines and XY (4 or 6 question cases)
QA - Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Numbers and Modern Maths (Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry form the bulk of questions)
